Online presentation of the report ‘Gender-based persecution in Nicaragua: no silence, no oblivion’

The Guernica Centre for International Justice (G37 Centre) with the Mesoamerican Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders (IM-Defensoras) will publish a research study on gender-based persecution in Nicaragua. This report analyzes a gender-based persecution against the feminist and women's movement, as well as individuals on grounds of their gender identity, expression and sexual orientation, characterized by the perpetration of grave human rights violations targeting the very existence of this collectivity and those who comprise it.
The evidence gathered within the framework of this investigation, as well as the documented and analyzed violence presented in this report, make it possible to affirm that in Nicaragua the requirements are met—existence of a targeted group, intentionality and directionality against the collectivity, and differentiated use of state violence according to gender—that configure a clear case of political persecution on gender grounds.
George Washington University’s Global Women’s Institute will be supporting us in the presentation of the report, virtual modality. It will feature the participation of our lawyer and associate, Gema Gutiérrez, who coordinated this effort, María Martín, Advocacy Coordinator at IM-Defensoras, Diana Silva, gender specialist an researcher on this project, Lisa Davis, professor of Law (CUNY School of Law) and Special Adviser on Gender and Other Discriminatory Crimes to the International Criminal Court (ICC), and Tamara Dávila, Nicaraguan feminist leader, and former political prisoner.

Presentación online del informe ‘Persecución por motivos de género en Nicaragua: ni silencio, ni olvido’
El Centro Guernica para la Justicia Internacional (G37 Centre) junto con la Iniciativa Mesoamericana de Mujeres Defensoras de Derechos Humanos (IM-Defensoras) presentan una investigación sobre la persecución por razones de género en Nicaragua, contra el movimiento feminista y de mujeres, así como contra otras personas por motivos de su identidad de género, expresión y orientación sexual, caracterizada por la ejecución de graves violaciones a derechos humanos dirigida contra la existencia de esta colectividad y de quienes la integran.
La evidencia recogida en el marco de esta investigación, así como las violencias documentadas y analizadas que se presentan en este informe permiten afirmar que en Nicaragua se cumplen los requisitos -existencia de un grupo objetivo, la intencionalidad y direccionalidad contra la colectividad y un uso diferenciado de la violencia estatal según el género- que configuran un claro caso de persecución política por razones de género.
El Global Women Institute de la Universidad George Washington, nos acompaña en la presentación del informe, en modalidad online, con la participación de nuestra abogada y asociada Gema Gutiérrez, quien coordinó este proyecto, María Martín, coordinadora de Incidencia de la IM-Defensoras, Diana Silva, especialista en género e investigadora en el marco de este proyecto de género, Lisa Davis, profesor de Derecho en la Universidad de ciudad de Nueva York (CUNY) y Asesor Especial de la Corte Penal Internacional sobre Género y otros delitos discriminatorios, y Tamara Dávila, líder feminista nicaragüense y ex presa política.
