Gema Gutiérrez

Gema Gutiérrez Hernández is a Spanish lawyer, member of the Madrid Bar Association since 2017. She is specialising in Spanish criminal law, human rights, and international criminal law, with experience under the principle of universal jurisdiction cases.

 

She has experience as lawyer in the Spanish courts -including at the Spanish National Criminal Court- and as a criminal law consultant. She was deeply involved in the historic Jesuit trial in Spain since 2014 until the verdict and sentencing in 2020, as assistant lawyer. At the moment, she is mainly involved in extraterritorial cases in Spanish jurisdiction in a line of work called ’strategic litigation’, and also leads the coordination of one of the organization’s Latin American projects, focusing on promoting justice in Nicaragua.

 

Gema finished her Law Degree at the University Rey Juan Carlos I of Madrid in 2014 and completed her master’s degree in criminal legal practice to qualify for the Bar Exam in 2016. In 2019, she finished her Master of Law (LLM) in Criminal Law and Procedural Law at the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid, paying special attention to recent criminal phenomenon, such as corruption, organized crime, high-tech crimes, white-collar crimes or restorative justice and transitional justice, as well as to expansion of abilities concerned the accusation instruments in these types of criminality. During her LLM, she demonstrated her aptitude with a thesis on transitional justice.
